The problem is that this is a concept difficult to get through to people. This subject comes up in a few college courses I teach, and it's fun to see the lights turn on when a student "gets it."Dan of Earthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04957424338566461756noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-737080860119263961.post-76902456091025420842009-08-08T05:38:56.907-07:002009-08-08T05:38:56.907-07:00Everything in popular culture is a rehash of a reh...Everything in popular culture is a rehash of a rehash. Nothing is ever "new." New is just a discourse to encourage consumption of the stuff we don't really need (more rulebooks, "better" editions). D&D is one of the best examples of this. By constantly changing, D&D loses the timelessness of ofther classic games. It's a shame.Kiltedyaksmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03462341093016199620noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-737080860119263961.post-28676753341688240232009-08-08T04:58:16.617-07:002009-08-08T04:58:16.617-07:00Even in technology, the idea of evolution is mostl...Even in technology, the idea of evolution is mostly an illusion. Is there truly a piece of technology out there with which we cannot survive and cannot continue to be successful human beings? Certainly there are some that will make us more comfortable, or healthier — but are they truly necessary? The need to have the latest edition of anything is largely due to successful marketing, convincing you that what already works just fine is somehow broken. In computer technology, just as with the shifts to 3e and 4e, they create a false need by denying backward compatibility, thus forcing a complete shift by the customer in order to "keep up." At its core is not a desire to make something "better," but rather a desire to get as much money out of their customers as possible.FrDavehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00459281821319914530noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-737080860119263961.post-53447139525711986732009-08-07T16:04:42.916-07:002009-08-07T16:04:42.916-07:00oh yeah, i see that ad&d screen now. yep, swe...oh yeah, i see that ad&d screen now. yep, sweet Grenadier monster packs from back then, among others i'm sure.ze bulettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15603716850479808633noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-737080860119263961.post-9794628235817291212009-08-07T13:11:02.860-07:002009-08-07T13:11:02.860-07:00My favorite version of D&D is the 1974 rules (...My favorite version of D&D is the 1974 rules (with supplements added to taste). That said, all the TSR versions of D&D and AD&D are broadly compatible. Even (for example) a 2nd edition AD&D module can be used on the fly in an OD&D game.

Everything changed with 3rd edition, though, and 4th edition continues that trend. With these latest two editions, it's not basically the same game anymore. A part of me hopes that's the case (although there's nothing wrong with making a buck in and of itself), and though I don't play anything currently, by say, Chaosium, it does somehow garner them some more respect from me and make me want to look at their system more.

Working in IT, business owners constantly gripe to me about having been "forced to upgrade" by Intuit, Microsoft, Apple, or whoever. At the end of the day, they just want to get the job done and don't want to spend more money on something when they don't need or want new "features". I empathize with them, and feel much the same when when it comes to my rpgs. If I want a whole new system or game, I can find one. With the Eternally New Edition, at some point the game iz not the zame.ze bulettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15603716850479808633noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-737080860119263961.post-87991718117532765032009-08-07T08:52:33.489-07:002009-08-07T08:52:33.489-07:00Great essay.
